Members of the African National Congress Women’s League (ANCWL) gathered in Chiawelo to celebrate one hundred and one year old Gogo letala Makamori (101).

According to ward 11 Women’s League chairperson, Marriam Ramafola, Makamori is a shining example of the beauty of life and should be celebrated.

“We came here today to celebrate the extraordinary life of Gogo Makamori. She is one of our senior figures in this community, and her presence alone is a blessing to us all,” said Ramafola.

The ANC Women’s League gathered at the house of one hundred and one year old Gogo Makamori to celebrate her life on Thursday in Chiawelo.

The women’s league did not arrive empty handed. They brought gifts, food and blankets for Makamori and her family. The day featured songs, laughter and prayers.

BEC member of Women’s league and part of Johannesburg Executive Committee, Tintswalo Maluleke said Gogo Makamori was an example for all women.

“For those who don’t know, she was very active in the struggle. This is a woman, like the likes of Nelson of Mandela, played their role to fight for us.

Today we celebrate life. Our own parents are no longer here, so we appreciate to still have people like Gogo Makamori,” said Maluleke.

Also in attendance was ward 11’s Councillor Maisie Maluleke. She said she was proud to be part of such a milestone.

“As a Councillor, I am proud to be witnessing something this extraordinary before my eyes. These days you are lucky to make it past fifty, so to see someone going to one hundred and one is some truly special,“ she said.

Gogo Makamori (101) is surrounded by family and friends during her Mandela day celebration in Chiawelo on Thursday.

51 year old Jacob Lefatola is Gogo Makamori’s eldest grandchild. He told Soweto Urban that Gogo was still very strong and that having her for such a long time has been a blessing.

“She has always been a hard worker, she still is. She does everything for herself, I could say we have the wheel chair as a precaution but for the most part, she is very active,” he said.

“We also want to thank everyone who came out here today to celebrate with us and we appreciate the effort.”
