The day was meant to mark a launch of a vegetable garden for the elderly to provide fresh vegetables and tendering the garden as an activity for the village residents, however, Keneilwe Ntaopane who is the media relations officer shared that they could not get the seeds for the garden so they had to unfortunately cancel the plan for the garden.

During an interview with the MMC, we asked him why he chose to visit Riverlea and he said: “I’m from Eldorado Park and as I travel through Riverlea and the other areas, we find that this area has been neglected and for us that is not a good thing.

“This is a rainbow nation and when you leave out one community it’s really a problem, so as the multi-party government we need to include everybody and today, you will find different MMC’s in different communities.

“Riverlea is the community where I played soccer in during my youth years, I have friends here so I decided to come and celebrate our seniors, we will be also refurbishing some of the units here.”

The department received a donation of fruit and vegetables from the Joburg Fresh Produce Market and these were delivered to the two retirement villages on the day.
