Applying for university? Be prepared!

The ABC when applying for a university course.

Your matric year is perhaps one of the most important years of your life as this is the year where you decide what course your life is going to take. You may want to take a gap year or start university but applying to university can be a daunting task at first.

It’s important to be self-aware before choosing to apply to a university, you need to know what your interests and passions are and which university is best aligned to them. It is also advisable to find out the requirements of that institution so that you are not disappointed by a rejection from the university.

One of the first things to do when applying for a space in university is to check the undergraduate guide of each university you plan on applying to.

The guide will provide you with a list of all the courses offered by the university, the requirements for each course and the possible career path each course offers. It also provides some insight into the campus life at the university and will give you an idea of the on campus accommodation options available to you.

It’s important to know that different institutions have different closing dates and that some courses have different closing dates to the institutional closing dates. Most institutions have a closing date of September 30 however courses that are in demand such as medicine usually close earlier. Some institutions may require you to write a test such as the National Benchmark Test (NBT) which tests your language and mathematics skills, you should also keep this in mind when applying.

Once you have chosen the universities you want to apply to, you need to get your documents in order. Make sure you have certified scanned copies of your ID, academic and social achievements, your parents’ recent payslips, proof of residence and your final grade 11 results as most universities use these when considering your application.

You also need to submit your grade 12 mid-year results with the grade 11 results, if you have already completed your matric then you need to send a certified copy of your final matric results.

Most institutions have gone digital but some still offer you the option to apply manually. If you choose to apply manually then you need to print out several application forms in case you make a mistake. It is advisable to take the filled out documents to the university yourself as they may not get to the institution on time should you post them. If the university is in another province then use a reliable courier to post them.

This process involves a lot of administration which is why most institutions charge an application fee, it is advisable to pay the application fee via EFT and send the proof of payment with the application. Refrain from sending cash in the post as institutions do not accept it and it may go missing somewhere along the line.

After following this process all you have to do is wait for an acceptance letter or email from the institutions you have applied to. If you want to check out what bursaries are available for your studies, go to www.cellcgirl.co.za
