Children battled it out during holiday games at the Eldorado Park Stadium

Children were provided with food and drinks by the South African National Council on Alcoholism (SANCA).

The three week long school holidays were exciting for the many schoolgoers who attended a holiday programme at the Eldorado Park Stadium.

Tom Cornelius, who is a soccer and fitness coach said that the aim of the holiday programme was to promote sports within the community.

“Very often our children become bored at home so the idea was to keep them active, but most importantly I wanted them to have fun,” said Cornelius.

A total of 80 children from Eldorado Park, Kliptown, Freedom Park and Slovo Park attended.

With the holiday programme focused on soccer, children had the opportunity to participate in a programme designed for beginner and intermediate-level players. “I have a passion for the game and I believe that I have an enthusiastic approach to coaching.

“Each day included a varied curriculum that encompassed all aspects of the game and will assist in improving skills development,” said Cornelius.

Children were provided with food and drinks by the South African National Council on Alcoholism (SANCA).

“I am extremely grateful to SANCA for sponsoring our holiday programme, without them it wouldn’t have been possible. Many families are struggling in our community, so I know that the food provided was appreciated and went a long way,” said Cornelius.

Children who participated in the holiday programme said that they had fun and learned a lot from coach Tom. The programme started on Wednesday June 26 and ended on Wednesday July 3.

“I initially planned to have this programme run for three weeks but due to sponsors I was only able to set it up for one week. This is something I would love to keep doing for the children of the Greater Eldorado Park,” Cornelius concluded.
