Antenatal and postnatal offered for those who cannot afford them

Antenatal and postnatal classes with a difference.

A baby shower for expecting mothers in the community was held in Dlamini, Soweto last month. The shower, hosted by Flourish aimed to celebrate motherhood and the beauty of raising a child. Floursih is a national social franchise supported by the Grow Great campaign, a campaign committed to helping babies and young children grow to their full potential.

Over the last 10 weeks, the expecting mothers attended antenatal and postnatal classes that aimed to support, celebrate and empower mothers through the first 1 000 days of their babies’ lives.

Tlotlisang Amanda Mokoena, who lead the local classes said that the programme was set up for mothers who could not afford to pay for antenatal and postnatal classes.

“This initiative is so important. Very often expecting mothers feel alone so we wanted to create a platform for companionship, belonging and acceptance,” said Mokoena.

“Four mommies from Eldorado Park and Five from Dlamini were at the baby shower. They received certificates for committing to the 10 visits.

They received hospital bags with everything mommy and baby inside and refreshments were served,” she added.

Mokoena also said that the next cycle will be starting soon. “A total of 40 expecting mothers will be joining.

20 for antenatal and 20 for postnatal. Flourish classes are a non-judgmental space where women come together to support each other through their pregnancy journey.

It’s an opportunity to love, play, cry, laugh and forge the future we want for our children,” she concluded.
