Eldos elderly participate in active aging games

The AAT gets together at the Eldorado Park Stadium every Monday and Wednesday not only to keep fit but to train for the annual Active Aging Cluster Games which will be held in Ruimsig this year.

Elderly residents are taking their lives back through fitness. The senior citizens from the Eldorado Park Active Aging Team (AAT) believe that taking the time to workout is the reason why they have been able to live long healthy lives.

Edna Harvey, who is the AAT chairperson said that being healthy should be on everyone’s agenda.

“Taking at least two hours a week for yourself is so important. The elderly play so many roles; we are mothers and fathers, grandparents, spouses, siblings and caregivers, and often times we forget to look after ourselves and that is what our active ageing team is about – making yourself and your health a priority as well as making time to spend with people who are of the same age,” said Harvey.

“I have noticed so many positive changes in people who join us. There is a difference in the way they walk and talk. They smile more and just seem happier, we are a family,” she added.

“We are all very excited about cluster games. We have trained hard and we feel ready for the challenge,” said Harvey.
Tom Cornelius, the AAT coach said that he was extremely proud of his team.

“They inspire me to be better. They work so hard and they are dedicated. Age to them is nothing but a number,” said Cornelius. “The team will be participating in various games this year. We have teams for Pass-the-ball, Ring-the-stick, Jukskei, Rugby Throw, 400 metres relay as well Brisk Walk,” he added.

The winners will qualify for the provincial games which will be held in September.

“If we win at the provincial level, we will qualify for the national games in Port Elizabeth,” said Harvey.
The cluster games are set to take place on July 12.
