‘Ngi grand nge nyaope nomayini’ awareness campaign in Protea Glen

A call for youth to say no to drugs.

The newly introduced ‘Ngi grand nge nyaope nomayini’ awareness campaign, which loosely translates to “I’m okay with doing nyaope no matter what”, was held in Protea Glen extension three last Sunday.

This awareness campaign is aimed at drug addicts in the community and seeks to help them with their rehabilitation journey. The awareness campaign takes on the form of a musical project where the addicts are given an opportunity to showcase their musical and dance skills.

Founder of the musical project, Pono Tshabalala, says he was inspired by his own daughter’s story to start the project.

“My daughter used to be a nyaope addict so when I successfully managed to help her get off the drug I knew I had to start something so I could help other people too,” he elaborated.

The June 16 celebration saw some of the drug addicts in Protea Glen get a chance to perform and share the story of how they started doing drugs with the rest of the community.

They were also offered an opportunity to sign up to go to rehab should they wish to with the help of ward 13 councillor George Mahlangu and Base 5 Guard’s Lucky Moshimane according to Tshabalala. It is very that drug addicts get a full nourishing meal so food was also provided to them during the day to help sustain them and get them on their way to good health.

Tshabalala aims to grow his musical project into a non-profit organisation that will help young drug addicts become drug free and give them practical skills that will make them employable.

He furthermore hopes to take the musical project throughout Soweto to help drug addicts in other communities.
