Disruptive operations held to clamp down on illegal miners at the George Harrison site and in Zamimpilo Informal Settlement

Upon arrival, the officers found bags of the Zama Zamas (Illegal miners).

On June 13, the Langlaagte police, Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) and the Emergency Management Services (EMS) embarked on a joint disruptive operation to clamp down on illegal mining at the George Harrison site and in Zamimpilo Informal Settlement.

This is just one of the operations for the year which the officials embarked on. In a previous article in January this year, officials from the Department of Mineral Resources (DMR) and a few members from the Riverlea Mining Forum met at the Langlaagte Police Station and went on the disruptive operation with the police officers.

Upon arrival, the officers found bags of the Zama Zamas (Illegal miners) and they searched those bags, in one of the bags explosives were found and Captain Mampa arranged for the explosives unit to fetch the explosives.

Money in a bottle was also found, no arrests were made as the police officers had no proof of who the explosives belonged to.

In the recent operation, communications officer for Langlaagte police Constable Phumi Kraai said, “Although there were no arrests made, these illegal miners were surely disrupted from performing their illegal operations.” Langlaagte police will have regular disruptive operations such as this to stop illegal mining in the area.
