Eldorado Park knitathon with the aim of keeping 600 babies warm

The knitathon has been extended to June 29.

The fourth annual Come Back Mission (CBM) knitathon took place at Eldorado Park Secondary School on Monday, June 17. Cheryl Pillay, who is a community leader, anti-drug activist, the founder of CBM as well as the chairperson of the Eldorado Park Local Drug Action Committee said that the initiative was very close to her heart and that it has grown over the years.

“The knitathon has been a success because of the women in our community who avail themselves. We are very fortunate to have women who are passionate about knitting amongst us, they create the most beautiful blankets, beanies and booties,” said Pillay.

“We have received wool donations from those who cannot knit, so we are confident that we will be able to reach our goal of clothing 600 babies,” she added.

Pillay also said that the goal is 600 babies because that is the number of babies born at the Baragwanath Hospital every week. “There are so many newborn babies who come into this world with nothing, so we want to make sure at the very least that they are kept warm,” said Pillay.

“There have also been talks about us starting a knitting club, where we will come together once a month and hopefully it will become a sustainable and an income generating initiative,” she added.

The knitathon has been extended to June 29.

“We will continue to knit and by the end of the month, we will showcase what we have created at the Eldos community market. The official handover and distribution will then take place in July,” said Pillay.
