Zak Park crowned the new champions of the June 16 Memorial Cup

The newly crowned champions walked away with the coveted prize of R100 000.

Zak Park was crowned the 2019 June 16 Memorial Cup champions after handing Vaal Monate a 4-0 defeat at the much-anticipated finals held at the Nike Football Centre on Sunday, June 16.

The newly crowned champions walked away with the coveted prize of R100 000 and the bragging rights of being called June 16 Memorial Cup title holders.

Both Zak Park and Vaal Monate showed hunger from the get-go, however, Zak Park was the first to net a goal through their number 8, Katlego Manyama.

Zak Park remained the strongest in the first stanza and they managed to score two more goals before heading to half time.

Zak Park continued where they left off when the second stanza of the match kicked off as they quickly netted the fourth goal, completely taking the game away from their opponents.

The quarterfinals of the June 16 Memorial saw Aston Villa being handed a 2-1 defeat by Mambas FC, Meadowlands being handed a 4-3 defeat by Vaal Monate, the match between Mathaithai and Zak Park was a draw and Zak Park won through penalties while The Rock handed Ndengeza a ‘two goals to nothing’ defeat.

Zak Park then won 3-1 against Mambas FC in the Semifinals while Vaal Monate won 6-1 against The Rock.

“We went where no other tournament on our level has gone before, going #BeyondFootball this year, made sure that players and teams were not the only ones that we took into hearts but we knew that there are families, supporters and communities that support these boys on a daily basis. How better to reward those that are behind the players with grocery hampers which they take back home when they deservedly won the Man of the Match prize,” said Reggie Moloi Chairman at Thabeng Management.

Another initiative that formed part of the #BeyondFootball tag was the June 16 Memorial Cup partnership with Xola Mlambo through the #XolaMlamboGoals4Pads, for every goal scored during the tournament, Xola made a commitment to donate a sanitary towel pack.

“We are proud to mention that 99 goals were scored in this year’s tournament,” added Moloi.

All 99 sanitary towel packs, including those that were donated by supporters that attended every single match, will be donated to various schools across Soweto.

The golden Boot sponsored by Puma South Africa was awarded to Lebogang Sentsho of Meadowlands All-Stars, Lebo Mohale of Zak Park was awarded Goalkeeper of the tournament, the award was sponsored by Unozinti Sports, Zak Park coach, Motaung Motsamai walked away with the Coach of the Tournament title, the award was sponsored by Rhulani Mokwena Foundation and the player of the tournament title was taken by Tumelo Matona of Zak Park.
