Safety, health and wellness awareness campaign to combat the high rate of crime taking place in Riverlea

Fun while being educated on crime.

The safety, health and wellness awareness campaign took place on Saturday, June 8 at the Riverlea Empowerment Centre.

The event was held due the high rate of crime taking place within the community, the house break-ins were a major reason for this event taking place.

According to Constable Phumi Kraai (Communications officer for Langlaagte police station) said: “The Langlaate Police service together with the inter faith, Emergency Medical Service (EMS), security companies, health and community safety.

This derived from the house break-ins and we also found out people enjoy fitness and active lifestyle.

Therefore, we decide to have the aerobics here, this is also so people can have fun health wise while being educated about the crime is happening around here.”

The SAPS South African Police Services (SAPS) together with some of the faith groups within the community planned this event to create awareness within the community and also bridge the gap between the community and not only the police but also the emergency services.

The event was not only for members of the community to be educated on crime and how to go about reporting it, there was also entertainment for the people from traditional dances to the aerobics which seem to be the highlight of the event.

Pastor Shaun Jegels (from Living Faith Christian Centre and CEO of Riverlea Empowerment Centre) commented on the event, “The Riverlea Empowerment centre is one of the major stake holders in this event which is called Divine intervention together with SAPS. Together with them we came to the conclusion that we need a way to eradicate crime. There has always been a divide between the community and the police now, this give the community a chance to ask the police and the emergency services why there is such poor service delivery.

“There is also smart start which is driven by social welfare, this company comes to equip especially females that want to start up crèches and after cares.”

People who came to the event went on a walk before the festivities really started the walk was done to invite more people to the event.

The walk was shorter than, planned due to the late start. After the walk people were encouraged to visit each of the stalls set up.

The stalls at the event were not only the inter faith and emergency services stall but there was also Smart Start, security companies and Fitness chance.

Each stall gave the community members a chance to learn about their safety, health and wellness. The South African National Blood Service (SANBS) was also at the event giving the people a chance to donate blood to save lives.
