Magicians the 2019 champions of the men’s senior Steven Pienaar Community Cup

Home teams in the open men’s tournament were knocked in the quarter and semi-finals.

The Steven Pienaar Community Cup finals took place this past weekend with spectators filling the stadiums to see the last two teams in each division battling for that number one spot.

Over the past few weeks the tournament had 152 junior teams, 60 ladies’ teams, and 32 senior teams. The finals were held at the Bill Jardine Stadium on June 17.

Unfortunately, our home teams in the open men’s tournament were knocked in the quarter and semi-finals leaving Robin Crest who is a team from the University of Johannesburg (UJ) campus residence and Magicians who are all the way from Krugersdrop based in an area called Mandeville.

The teams played a very competitive game and Magicians almost had their first goal in the first few seconds of the game.

With four collective attempts of scoring the teams ended the first half with a score of 0-0. Coming back into the second half Magicians managed to get their goal and the game ended with a final score of 0-1, making Magicians the 2019 champions of the men’s senior Steven Pienaar Community Cup and the winners of the R100 000 prize money.

The Ladies Finals were played before the men’s final. The two teams were Catalonia Ladies against UJ Ladies, the finals score for that match was 2-1 and the ‘woman of the match’ was eighteen-year-old Nicole Michael from the winning team Catalonia Ladies.

As told before by committee member John George, the tournament started off in 2013 with only four teams, the main aim of the tournament was to draw the youth away from the gangsterism in our community and to create a platform for the youngsters to thrive.

After the 2019 Steven Pienaar Community Cup was done, the committee posted on their Facebook page stating: ‘The Steven Pienaar Community would like to take this opportunity to express our sincere gratitude for all our partners; Aspen Pharmacare, Gauteng Provincial department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, The City of Johannesburg: Community Development, Jowest Local Football Association, Lotto Sport and Clover SA, participating teams and the community at large. Without your assistance, this event would not be a success.’
