Marwala concluded, “In the spirit of Tsietsi Mashinini now it’s the time to transform the landscape of our industrial base to tickle the problems of poverty, unemployment, and inequality.”

Prof. Phakeng highlighted the importance of African languages in Education. “Our African language have no value, you cannot exchange them and you know them but they mean nothing.”

“We have social workers or doctors or people who will work in the public to serve majority of people who are multilingual or black and some of them are not fluent in English but we train professionals who cannot speak one African language.”

“We at UCT have a requirement for our students who are studying to become Medical Doctors to pass isiXhosa and you don’t graduate at UCT if you didn’t pass isiXhosa. We do it with doctors because we feel that they are going to serve our people and they need to be able to speak the African language,” she added.
