Fire disaster leaves family stranded

What should’ve been a relaxed Friday turned into a horrible day for the Mahlase family after their house burnt down on Thursday afternoon in Naledi.

The fire allegedly started in Gogo Elizabeth Mahlase’s bedroom and fast spread to other rooms in the house, this incident occurred in the afternoon at approximately 2 pm according to the eye witness who is the neighbour.

Bonisiwe Mkhizi went to the Mahlase’s home to ask for vinegar when she saw fire flames on her way out coming out from Gogo Mahlase’s room who was not home at the time. She went back to alert Martha P who was assisting children to undress their school uniform.

“I saw the fire on my way out and immediately went back to alert Martha Pooe, when they got out of the house, I ran to call my father in law because he was a firefighter but when we got back the rest of the house had already caught fire”.

“We don’t know the cause of the fire but it started on the wardrobe in Gogo’s room without any heater – without any candle,” said Mkhize.

Thami Mahlase said he was heartbroken when he saw his grandmother’s house burnt to the ground, he said he was at work when he got the call informing him of the horrible incident that occurred in his absence.

The fire disaster robbed the family of all their belongings including clothes, their personal documents among other things. Everyone made it out of the house without sustaining any injuries. According to the eyewitness, the firefighters were not helpful as they came to the scene an hour late.

Councillor of Naledi George Basupane said his office received donations from the Department of Disaster Management; they provided four beds, food parcels and blankets. Basupane thanked Jerry Seleboko from disaster management for their swift response.

“We are also pleading to individuals and business persons who can lend a helping hand for the reconstruction of the property especially to those who own hard wires as the house was burnt to the ground. Donations such as bricks, cement and other material can be of great assistance to the Mahlasa family”.
