COJ ‘advances diphetogo’

The City of Johannesburg MMC for Finance Funzela Ngobeni tabled the City’s 2019/2020 budget this morning.

The overall budget for the City stands at R64. 5 billion with a particular focus on public safety, community and basic services infrastructure and the social and health sectors.

“This budget has its genesis in the halls and streets of this great City of ours. It stems from engagements with communities and stakeholders where we have listened and heard the will of our people,” said MMC Ngobeni.

Various communities in Soweto are set to benefit in the Medium-term draft plan through the development of infrastructure.



Meadowlands and Diepkloof Hostels will be upgraded and refurbished.

The Health Department will receive a capital budget of R217 million over multiple years which will see to the construction and upgrades of clinics in Freedom Park, Meadowlands and Naledi amongst other communities.

Ngobeni also announced that the COJ will be opening ten mobile clinics across the City.

Transport services in the City are set to improve as more as an investment into acquiring more Rea Vaya buses will be made. The City will also start implementing an integrated fare system for Rea Vaya and Metrobus.

These were some of the biggest takeaways from the 2019/2020 COJ budget for the residents of Soweto.
