A hike in the Kliprivierberg Nature Reserve

While hiking there is also old historic buildings such as ‘The Homestead’ where the Marais and Quilliam Family occupied the farm between the years of 1850 and 1978, back then it was called ‘Rietvlei’.

When it comes to family time, exercise and a good time in nature then there’s nothing that screams more than a ‘family hike’.

With the sun out, this past weekend the weather was great for a family day out at the Kliprivierberg Nature Reserve which is situated between Kibler Park and Winchester Hills.

The reserve belongs to the City of Johannesburg and has no entrance fee, it has a number of trails with different kilometres and different animals to spot such as zebras, yellow mongoose, different birds and so forth.

The fun thing about hiking is that you meet new people, you find groups who are there for spiritual reasons, you find groups who are there for teambuilding and then between the groups you just find individuals who are there to relax, you find some people reading and writing along the river, and there’s some there to capture nature.

Although hiking is not for everyone, it sure is a good time out in nature. When hiking the few most important things that you need to have is: sunblock, a hat, enough water, comfortable walking or hiking shoes, a first aid kit, and a good walking stick if you know the up or downhills are going to be a problem for you.

Always keep to the parks rules as well, do not drink from the river, swim in it, start fires in the reserve, no fishing, no motorcycles or cars, do not litter and do not vandalise the property.

Next time you feel like escaping the city for a few hours, all you need to do is take a hike and it may just revitalise you.
