Apply now for the South African Maths and Science Teacher Internship Programme (SAMSTIP) Bursary

Closing date for applications is 24 May 2019.

SAMSTIP is a partnership between Investec, ISASA and the Department of Basic Education (DBE) that aims to address a root cause of South Africa’s skills shortage: the critical lack of qualified mathematics and science teachers. School-leavers, graduates and mid-career professionals are targeted in the recruiting drive. The internship involves four years of study to obtain a degree in education (B.Ed.) or one year for a Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE).

SAMSTIP is offering prospective Senior and Further Education and Training (FET) teachers specialising in the fields of Mathematics and the Sciences an opportunity to win bursaries to study for a B.Ed. degree or a PGCE at UNISA.

The internship includes a full cost bursary with UNISA fees, textbooks, a transport and accommodation allowance, and a monthly stipend of R2500 per intern. Participants also have access to professional student support services such as psychosocial services, academic and personal development workshops for the duration of their studies.

Who can apply?
•    18-26-year-old South African citizen
•    School leavers with matric exemption (Bachelor pass) and 60% or more in Mathematics, Sciences (Life Science or Physical Sciences) and English;
•    Tertiary students with Mathematics and Sciences (Life Science or Physical Sciences) credits;
•    Graduates with Mathematics and/or Science majors.
•    From all provinces – must be willing and able to relocate to a different province for purposes of their internship at one of ISASA schools.

Benefits of the programme:
•    Learn from and be mentored by experienced school teachers
•    Access to excellent teaching, learning resources and technology
•    Training in Independent Schools Association of Southern Africa (ISASA) schools
•    Targeted academic enrichment support, and other value-added services

Upon completing their studies, graduates get placed by DBE at various public schools in the country where there’s a need and they’re required to work for the number of years equivalent to their benefit from the internship programme i.e. 4 years in the programme = 4 years in a public school. After the work back period, the qualified teacher can decide whether they want to work at an independent school or remain in a public school.
