Eskom’s leaked memo reveals ‘Brokenness’ within the organisation

This week saw the country’s electricity provider-Eskom’s leaked memo which revealed the company’s brokenness and lack of order.

In the memo, Eskom’s Chief Operating Officer Jan Oberholzer was appealing to stuff to help the power provider fix its brokenness. The memo contains a host of pictures that indicate poor workmanship and incompetence.

In the statement, Oberholzer states that “Ownership is about taking initiative and being responsible for doing what one is contracted to do in the efficient and most cost-effective way for the best interest of the organisation”

He proceeded to add that if ownership is about being responsible and taking initiative, then accountability is about to follow through and ensuring that the job is done with the stipulated timeframe.


The memo also includes a host of pictures which indicate instances of vandalism. Image Eskom.

“Accountability is also about understanding that we work within a dynamic and fluid system and that other team members are reliant on the results of our work” Oberholzer demanded.

In the memo, Oberholzer also underlined that the company was facing recurrent vandalism and theft which resulted in four cases of vandalism, costing Eskom a whopping R115. 7 Million.
