An alleged shortage of contraceptives at Eldorado Park clinics

Since the beginning of 2019, there has been a challenge with injectable contraceptives.

Female residents in Eldorado Park are fed up with the clinics in the community. According to residents, there has been a shortage of contraceptives at the Extension Two, Eight and Nine clinics.

According to Nicolene Human, a resident in Extension Eight, the clinics in the area have been out of contraceptives since November last year.

“I went to the clinic on November 16 last year and back then I was told that they were out of stock. I went back in February, I was told again that they were out of stock,” said Human. “I then had to resort to going to my doctor where I am charged R150. It’s a huge inconvenience because I am spending money I simply do not have,” she added.

Another resident, Yolanda Petersen said that the same happened to her. “It’s worrying because without contraceptives females will fall pregnant unexpectedly. It’s an ongoing issue and it needs to be addressed,” said Petersen.

Residents have also complained about the treatment they receive from the staff at the local clinics.”We spend all day at the clinics. The staff take long lunches and are not friendly,” said Human.

Sandile Gwayi who is the manager for communications and stakeholder relations at the Department of Health said that the above-mentioned clinics have had consistent stock of implanon and oral contraceptives.

” However, since the beginning of 2019, there has been a challenge with injectable contraceptives. The pharmacy has been rationing stock. The first two months of the year Nur-isterate was rationed and the facility had more Petogen (a 3-month injection). Currently, Petogen is being rationed and Nur-isterate is more available, ” said Gwayi.

” The facility’s stock tends to be rapidly depleted because of excess clients from neighbouring clinics. However emergency orders to the pharmacy are submitted regularly, ” he concluded.
