The Gigi Gang Show puts upcoming artists on the spotlight

The country’s first ever one-woman show finally took place at the Elkah Stadium in Soweto on Saturday and left spectators full of praise.

Many expected to see Gigi Lamayne rapidly changing outfits in-between performances however, spectators were treated to something even more profound. One of the most established female Hip hop artists in the continent using her status, to give upcoming artists a platform to showcase their talent in front of thousands, whilst simultaneously sharing the stage with some of the most established artists in the country.

Indeed the most humbling aspect of The Gigi Gang Show was how little it had to with Gigi herself, and more to do promoting upcoming talent and women empowerment.

The Gigi Gang show was a refreshing reminder of Gigi’s humility and selflessness. Being an independent artist, the frightful task of organizing an event of this magnitude fell solely to her. Despite a delayed start, the show outdid expectations.

This was according to Kamohelo Kesi, who attended the event.

“It was better than anything I had expected. Everyone here enjoyed themselves and I’m happy with the venue she chose. If it comes back here again next year I will definitely be here” said Kesi.

The fans were not the only ones who had praise for The Gigi Gang show, Faith K, an upcoming artist from Chiawelo who performed at the show, also took time to thank Lamayne for the opportunity.

“It was more than a great show, it was an important show,” she said.

“We are in a male dominated industry, so to see a woman set up something of this magnitude is great, and the experience itself, just to share the stage with the likes of Nadia, Nomuzi and Mshoza has been amazing,” said the Neeh hit maker.

Eminent Fam, another product of Chiawelo put in a stellar performance that had spectators screaming at the top of their lungs. Speaking for the group, Boni said the they (Eminent Fam) appreciated the opportunity.

“For Soweto, an event like is fantastic, Joburg has Back to The City, we don’t have something like that around chiawelo so I think even for the kids it was a unique experience,” He said

The music industries’ hotshots such as Nomoozlie, Nadia Nakai, Khuli Chana, Reason and Mshoza all got behind Lamayne’s cause with stellar performances. Speaking to Soweto Urban shortly before her performance, Gigi Lamayne said the late Pro Kid influenced her decision to include local artists.

“The late Pro was a big factor, he was always about putting on local talent and that’s what this was about, I really hope we find our next big artist here,” she said.

Despite the overwhelmingly successful show, the 1 bar rapper admitted organizing the event had its challenges.

“It was hard, in terms of sponsorships and artists but they came through, especially the females and I appreciate that so much, no one thought women could do it but we’re here and we are doing it,”

Lamayne also confirmed that The Gigi Gang Show is scheduled to go on annually for at least the next three years; this is after one of the show’s sponsors renewed their contract. Keamogetswe Ramela from Naledi, Katlego Mahlangu from Diepkloof and Martha Mabolo walked away with Soft n’ free gift packs from the show.
