Saint Joseph the Worker Catholic Church Bosmont celebrates 50 years

The Bosmont Masjid was the first religious building completed in 1966.

A Dutch Catholic Priest, puts together a team comprising a Jewish Architect that has never designed a church before, an Italian builder, gifts from Afrikaners, paintings by a protestant and sculpture by an African, in a coloured community at the height of apartheid in 1969.

The detail behind this unique octagonal Catholic Church in Bosmont. The parishioners and guests of Saint Joseph the Worker Catholic Church Bosmont were reminded of the rich history around this unique church opened in 1969.

Flanked on one side by the Bosmont Masjid and the other by St Lukes Anglican Church opened 3 years later in 1972.

The three religious institutions next to one another unique in itself.

On May 5, a celebration which marked the 50Th Anniversary of the Catholic Church was held by the holiest celebration for a Catholic, Mass.

The main celebrant was Archbishop of Johannesburg Buti Thlagale OMI. Co celebrants were the current parish priest Fr Uzo Ohanele ex parish priest’s Fr Richard Stonier, Fr Cletus Onwudiwe, Fr Ronnie Houreld and Deacon Wally Adams.



Representatives from the Holy Family Sisters, Dominican Sisters, Saint Vincent De Paul and Knights of Da Gama who all played a role in the development and growth of the community were present to celebrate the five decades, with the parishioners.

Two granite plaques were unveiled by the Archbishop after Mass. The first one marking the occasion as dedicated by the Archbishops Mass. The second, recognition of the extraordinary priest Fr Jan Molenaar OMI and architect Donald Turgel that designed the church.

All guests were treated to a digital and picture exhibition of the 5 decades of the church and its people. The launch of the commemorative brochure was also launched. The brochure covers the rich history of the church its unique architecture, carvings and paintings over the 5 decades of the parish of Saint Joseph the Worker Catholic Church.
