The Electoral Commission has announced it is ready for the May 8 National and Provincial Elections.

It’s all systems go for the 2019 national and provincial elections which are scheduled to take place next week on May 8.

The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) announced on Wednesday that it is ready to assist millions of South Africans cast their votes in the sixth general elections since the advent of democracy.

Registered voters who live outside the country have already cast their votes and according to the IEC and that process went well without any glitches.


 


“The first votes cast in the elections on Saturday 27 April by voters abroad are currently being received at the National Office of the Electoral Commission. The first batches of cast ballots are expected from today and will trickle until all are received from the 121 missions around the world,” reads a statement from the Electoral Commission.

The final preparations will be concluded this weekend and the country’s 22 924 voting stations are expected to be ready by Monday.

Special votes will also commence on Monday where IEC officials will visit those who can’t make it to their voting stations and assist them from the comfort of their own homes.



This year South Africa saw the increase in the number of political parties contesting the elections with the number of registered voters standing at slightly above 26 million. This is how the 2019 National and Provincial elections look in numbers:

• 26,736,710 registered voters.
• 774 094 voters have been granted permission to cast a special vote.
• 452 418 will vote at their homes assisted by election officials
• 76 parties are contesting the elections.
• 60 million ballot papers to be made available.
• 300 000 ballot boxes to be used.
• Nearly 45 000 voting compartments.
• 25 000 voting station arrow signs.
• 56 255 stationery packs.
• 189 000 election officials will assist voters
• About 8 election officials per voting station.
• 66 observer organisations have been accredited by the IEC.
• Over 700 journalists applied for accreditation for the Results Operations Centre
• 450 computers set up at the Results Operations Centre
