Sewage spillage affecting the livelihood of a Horseshoe (Riverlea Extension Two) family

Sewage spillage in Horseshoe

A resident in Horseshoe (Riverlea Extension Two) had a sewage spillage at her home. According to the resident, the home has become unlivable because of the stench. On April 2, at around 10.45 am – Amaani Thomas noticed sewage water gushing from her outside drain for about an hour. She then lodged a complaint with Johannesburg Water and received a reference number.

Thomas said after an hour of sewage water flowing out of her drain it stopped, then started coming out of the drain at around 4.30 pm and by 5 pm the water began to sweep out of her toilet and this went on until 8 pm.

Thomas explained that when this happened; friends, community and family members contacted Johannesburg Water to stress the urgency of this problem.

Thomas went on to explain that she was told by Johannesburg Water that she had to wait her turn because there is 24-hour turnover time. Thomas and her husband spent about three-hours sweeping sewage water and faeces out of their home, while her children had to sit on the bed.

She discovered that there had been contractors authorised to install toilets for the Informal Settlement of Zamimpilo. According to the resident, the contractors had connected the informal settlements sewage flow with the sewage flow of residents from Horseshoe.

Thomas concluded, “I am appalled by the lack of concern expressed by the Johannesburg Water Call Centre agent and her disregard for the health and well-being of my minors. I have interacted with various individuals involved with the installation of the toilets at the Zamimpilo Informal Settlement and have expressed my concern regarding the sewage situation and my impending fear of a reoccurrence of events. I have been assured that they are working on a solution which will not impact the residents of Horseshoe.”

Due to the vast amount of damage to the Thomas home, the entire family had to move to temporary accommodation.
