Passion with love and thanksgiving (PWLAT), an organisation in Eldorado Park has been giving back to the community for the past four years.
The organisation focuses on ensuring residents have ingredients to cook a healthy, decent meal.
George Ishmail, from PWLAT said that with poverty being so rife in the community, several households go without food for days on end and that the key function of the organisation is to feed the people. The organisation hands out farm fresh vegetables to residents on a weekly basis.
“There’s so much poverty and too many single mothers in the area. We believe that providing them with vegetables gives them a kick-start for a nutritious meal.
We try to reach out to the community once a week but within the next few months we hope to do it more often because the need is dire,” said Ishmail.
He also said that traveling to the farm has become difficult because of the distance.
“We spend alot of money on fuel, we also have to pay our driver, so with the vegetable pack there is a fee of R30.
This ensures that petrol costs are covered,” said Ishmail.

70-year-old Jane Moffot, who is the founder of the organisation, uses her pension to pay for fuel and admitted that many times she gives her very last to make sure vegetables are delivered at her home.
Moffot said that is has always been a dream of hers to help people.
“For many years, people would come to my home and I would share my food with them. It breaks my heart knowing that there are people who are without food.
A few years ago, I then decided to actively do something about it. I wanted to help in a way that was sustainable. And today, we provide several households with a variety of vegetables,” said Moffot.
“The only thing I request of the many residents who come and collect their packs is that they pray over the food they prepare. Very often we forget to thank God for making everything possible,” she added.
Vegetable packets are prepared on the day of collection, which is usually on a Thursday. Residents are encouraged to bring their own plastic packets when collecting. “Because my pension is used for all the expenses, buying our own plastic bags has been a challenge,” said Moffot.
