Ballroom for the elderly: Keeping healthy with Tango and Rumba

Teaching the elderly how to dance

There are dance classes for seniors that will be taking place at the Recreational Centre in Riverlea called Social Ballroom. The classes will be on Tuesdays and Thursdays for at least an hour. Classes will last from 10 am till 11 am.

“I started dancing when I was very young, I attended dance classes in Noordgesig. I grew up there, and we did dancing as a hobby at first but now we are teaching old people in the community how to dance.

“This is to help the elderly to get their life in order because some old people just sit at home their children not worried about them, we are here to give these old people something to do and make them feel good about it.

“Dancing is done at any stage of life, it is something as simple as doing the washing or cleaning the house. Somehow, I always dance when doing these things,” said Nazley Ganchie.

The dance classes were started to keep the elderly healthy and to just have something to do. The classes teach different types of dance such as the rumba, lang-arm, tango etc.

Ganchie and her partners have been teaching dance for years. They started in Brixton, then moved to Bosmont and now teach in Riverlea at the Recreational Centre because of renovations being done to the place they used in Bosmont.

Young people can also join the classes on a Sunday. Ganchie does not want the lang-arm dance to die but wants the dance to live through each generation.
