Ex-drug addicts and ex-convicts given a new start through beauty

Make-up in its art form.

Beauty classes at the Riverlea Recreational Centre started teaching ex-drug addicts, ex-convicts and young unemployed people in Riverlea how to do make-up and also help them start their own salons.

The Precious Moments and Consulting (PMC) is based in Riverlea and Braamfontein and is accredited by the South African Association of Health and Skincare Professionals (SAAHSP).

Owner of PMC, Akhona Ndindwa is just 29-years-old. Ndindwa completed her make-up artistry diploma in 2008 at the age of 18. She fell in love with special effects (burns, wounds, ripped of fingers etc) and she instantly knew she wanted to become a make-up artist.

Ndindwa has worked in the film and entertainment industry. She has also done make-up for magazines, movies, music videos and Jo’burg Fashion Week.

“In 2016, I was approached by one of the biggest make-up academies to teach. This was when I realized that I am passionate about transferring my skills. In 2017, PMC make-up academy was launched without any funding or start-up capital and just three students expressed interest, all the money raised had to go to rent, equipment etc.

I persevered because I could see what I wanted and visualized where I wanted to see myself,” said Ndindwa.

The academy now has 25 students. One PMC’s students Franklin Jonkers said, “I have a love for make-up since I saw actors on shows such as Generations wearing make-up that looked almost natural and that inspired me to want to know more about doing make-up.

“Make-up is a sort of art form for me, it amazes me the effect make-up can have on a person. I and a few others decided to join the classes, just to do something with our lives and we joined the make-up classes.

“Even though the classes are free, the make-up and equipment we had to buy for ourselves and that can be very expensive for us because we are unemployed.”

The beauty classes will be needing some donations for students who cannot afford to buy the products needed for the classes. Make-up and anything to do with beauty products can be left at the Recreation Centre with Bernice Dollies 073 961 3525.
