61 houses were assessed by the Eldorado Park (LDAC) to verify if the guardians do not misuse the children social grant

A step towards eradicating substance abuse and child neglect.

Members from the Eldorado Park Local Drug Action Committe (LDAC), Community Police Forum (CPF) and the Eldorado Park Neighborhood Watch are committed to serving the community and ensuring that steps are taken to eventually achieve a drug free community.

Several members from LDAC, CPF and the Neighbourhood Watch embarked on a blitz in one of the areas in Eldorado Park- Old Eldos. The blitz was organised following the removal of four children from their home in the same area the weekend before.

The aim of the blitz was to go into homes and verify whether SASSA cards were present in the homes of the children who benefit from social grants.

Living conditions of many households in old Eldos.

“Because child neglect is so rife in our community, we thought it was important to go into homes and assess the living conditions,” said Anti-drug activist, Dereleen James.

Anti drug activist and community leader Cheryl Pillay was a part of the blitz and confirmed that a total of 61 homes were assessed that evening.

“The most important thing is that we saw for ourselves the extreme poverty in the area. There is absolutely no hygiene and in many of the homes there was dirty laundry everywhere, cockroaches and spider webs,” said Pillay.

“In some of the homes, the children’s SASSA cards were with money lenders, so in such cases we will follow up with SASSA and do the necessary,” she added.

Pillay also said there were cases where children had no birth certificates.

“People need to realise that it is a serious offence to have children without birth certificates,” said Pillay.

Illegal connections still a major concern in the community.

The community leader also said that she came across a child headed home. “We will do an analysis of the 61 cases we came across so far and look at what we can do as far as other interventions for these cases,” said Pillay.

The members also came across various weapons while searching residents. The streets covered were Koerand Streetand Jaspis Street.
