Raiders bag gold at annual tourney

Raiders Rugby Club claim gold at GLRUA 7

After losing a number of players from the previous Raiders first team, the new squad shows what they are made of at the Golden Lions Rugby Union Annual 7’s tournament.

The tournament went over a period of weekends but according to Thaakir Dawood who is the public relations manager for the Raiders Rugby Club, the club came out tops at the tournament.

“The men from the Bill Jardine Stadium had no easy route to the final as they came up against the best clubs and university sides over the weekend of March 23 to get into the finals. As many of us know, the rivalry between Raiders and the University of Johannesburg (UJ) is one of the biggest in the league and there was no love lost in the final when Raiders and UJ met,” he said.

According to Dawood, the match was tightly contested in the opening stages with both teams testing each other’s strengths and weaknesses, however, it was Raiders that drew first blood and there was no looking back from there.

Raiders then opened the flood gates and ran riot over true students as  there was no way back into the match. The final score was 26-0 and this ended the Raiders trophy drought.

“This looks like the start of many good things to come for the fairly young squad which is being captained by experienced campaigner Tumelo Maake who is showing the youngsters the ropes,” concluded Dawood.

The first team will be playing their first round in the Pirates Grand Challenge on April 6 against Pirates Rugby Club and their second round against Randfontein Rugby Club on April 13.
