Sivelile Primary School tops all regional choral choirs

The school has obtained position one throughout competitions that the school entered.

Mfanafuthi Madondo is the choirmaster at Sivelile Primary School. When he joined the school there were no extramural activities that were taking place except for sports.

In 2012, when he started introducing chorale – children were keen to join in and learn more about choral music. Madondo said that choral teaches you discipline and how to dress respectfully.

Ever since he opened a school choir, the school has obtained position one throughout competitions that the school entered.

“The extra effort that these children put in really pays off because when they are on stage they know what to do and how to do it,” said Madondo.

Madondo said when he introduced choral music at the school the children would come in and he would allow them to be themselves in order to create an environment where they all could feel comfortable.

“I believe that when it comes to music people are born with the talent and that in South Africa one can take it as a career and further it,” he added.

The school was honoured to be visited by the Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra as they bought 60 instrumental band pieces to give to the children and motivated them to continue doing great.

This year at the Segarona Music Awards the school will be defending their title. Madondo recalls when he got to the school, there were only two trophies that the school had but now they have over 50 awards.
The school has three phases which are the foundation phase, intermediate and the senior phase.

Madondo said he was disappointed when he obtained position two in 2018 because it was his first time introducing a boys choir but is confident that success is headed their way.
