Joburg Water officials afraid to enter and work in Eldorado Park due to violent attacks from the community

'Joburg Water officials are being targeted' - Councillor Fazel Jaffer.

Ward Councillor Fazel Jaffer said he is concerned about the violent attacks towards Joburg Water officials by the community. The councillor has confirmed that there have been several attacks towards the officials, leaving them afraid to enter and work in the Eldorado Park community.

“The assaults towards the Joburg Water officials started last year. One of the first attacks happened in Union Road where residents used firearms to rob these officials of their personal belongings.

Residents forcefully removed the officials from the branded Joburg Water truck and physically beat them up,” said Jaffer.T

he councillor also said that just last week, another incident occurred in Kremetart Street.

“The officials were mugged yet again, this time close to the old age village in Extension Three. Residents broke the passenger window and grabbed one of the official’s cellphones,” said Jaffer.

Jaffer also confirmed that other incidents occurred in Bohemia Street and Escort Street in recent weeks.
“Right now, the officials are refusing to come into the community because they fear for their safety. At the moment, we have a few blocked drains in the area but if residents do not play their part, we will end up with an even bigger problem in the weeks to come.

“I urge all residents to ensure the safety of these officials because we need their expertise to ensure that our drains are fixed and maintained in due time,” said Jaffer.

Dominique Palmer, who is the chairperson of the local Community Police Forum (CPF) said that they will be willing to assist as long as the officials let them know well in advance where and when they will be in the area.

“Safety is our priority so we work around accompanying the officials to ensure their work gets done,” said Palmer.
