Soweto Country Club refurbishment almost done

There are new design features which include green complexes, fairway bunkers and redesigned tees.

Golfers in and around Soweto will soon enjoy golf games like the acclaimed golfing legend, Gary Player Design’s renovation of Soweto’s only golf course, the Soweto Country Club in Pimville is almost complete as it is now in the final stages of grow-in, ahead of a scheduled reopening this month.

The view at the golf course looks beautiful as there are new design features which include green complexes, fairway bunkers and redesigned tees. There is a new water feature on the tenth, and a few holes have slightly changed to capture better strategy and visual awareness.

Two new holes have been introduced, and a new irrigation system from Hunter has been installed. Player’s firm designed the original course in 1972 and waived its design fee for the renovation project, which began early last year. 2018. The golf course has a long history, it had no proper fairway and the greens were made of sand.



Golfers from different unions and associations fought for the use of the facility, simply because it was the only one in the country used by South African black golfers.

The course is scheduled to host the Joburg Open on the Sunshine Ladies Tour on March 26-28, that’s a huge deal for the whole of Soweto. Meanwhile, the City of Johannesburg Executive Mayor, councillor Herman Mashaba, together with the City of Tshwane Executive Mayor, Councillor Stevens Mokgalapa, and the Executive Mayor of Midvaal Local Municipality, Councillor Bongani Baloyi responded to a clarion call at the Soweto Country Club on Wednesday, March 5.

Dressed in protective clothing, the mayors joined Joburg staff members as they picked up litter, pruned and planted streets in support of the City of Johannesburg’s Staff A Re Sebetseng monthly clean-up campaign.
