Kleikie Masopa and Mapule Mamaile left without money because of a problem with the new SA Post Office (Sapo) cards.

Elderly people left in misery.

Many social grant beneficiaries are still left without money because of a problem with the new SA Post Office (Sapo) cards which replaced the South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) cards.

The problem has seen Kleikie Masopa and Mapule Mamaile, the elderly people who live in Mapetla facing the same hiccup.

They depend on social grants for a living and were left stranded last week because they could not receive any money using their new Sassa cards.

According to Masopa, not only did they want to know where their money was but they also wanted to know why they were not informed.

Masopa said the experience she faced on the day she had to get her money was very painful after she was told at Protea Gardens that there was no money in her account.

“After I was told that there was nothing in my account, I went to Sassa at Chiawelo Post Office and was told that my money was transferred in my account and was also withdrawn at Protea Point FNB ATM situated at Protea North.

“To my surprise, I never even went to that place and I am asking myself what had happened with my money,” said the disappointed Masopa.

Mamaile, who also encountered the same problem, said she was also told that her money was withdrawn in Senaone.

“This problem occurred after we have changed our old Sassa cards to the new ones,” said Mamaile.

She said she had been trying to get answers but her efforts still prove fruitless.

Both the elderly said they depend on the social grant to earn a living and they are also supporting their grandchildren with the money so that they can go to school.

“I do not know what is going to happen next month when we have to get our money,” said Masopa who is receiving R1 700 monthly.

Ward 15 Councillor, Jabu Mnisi said he will very soon arrange for a meeting with those people who did not receive their money and will go with them at the post office to find out what the problem is.

“After arranging the meeting I will go with them at the post office to help them get their statements so that we can identify where their money is going to.

“Sometimes you can find that some of the beneficiaries make loans and you can find that their money is being debited by the cash loans,” said Mnisi.

Attempts to reach the Chiawelo Post Office proved fruitless going to print as their landline telephone kept ringing without any answer.
