For over a month, the traffic lights have not been operating between the Main Reef and Aalwyn Street in Horseshoe (Riverlea, Extension 2)

No traffic lights for Main Reef Road and Aalwyn Street Intersection.

The pedestrian bridge between Westbury and Coronationville has been in the news regarding vandalism. At least two Rea-Vaya stations in one road have been vandalised, including the traffic lights.

Vandalism is a criminal offence and perpetrators may face jail time if found guilty. Offenders usually get charged with malicious damage to property and trespassing.

This crime happens in some of the wards. When it comes to Main Reef Road, a roadway which is used by many commuters, it just gets worse.

Motorists and passengers suffer more because of the slow moving traffic and some people arrive late for work too. This is usually the case when the robots are not functioning or working.

For over a month, the traffic lights have not been operating, causing motorists to treat the intersection between the Main Reef and Aalwyn Street in Horseshoe (Riverlea, Extension 2) as a four-way stop.

A few residents have complained about the intersection and even stated that traffic congestion has become worse since the traffic lights stopped working.

Vandalism is a serious problem and it takes money to replace damaged traffic lights. Some traffic lights are just not working.

A few residents along with the ward councillor Basil Douglas had emailed and requested that Johannesburg Road Agency (JRA) fix the traffic lights but nothing has been done so far.

In an email forwarded by the ward councillor about a month ago, JRA responded by giving reference numbers. However, when a traffic light is vandalised, JRA will fix it and in no time the new traffic light will be vandalised again.

Residents claim that the vandals are possible drug addicts, although no arrest has been made. Sometimes robots get knocked over by car during an accident. So it isn’t always intended.

Residents can only remain hopeful that JRA comes up with a better solution so that the traffic lights can remain in place and untouched by vandals.

For now, the intersection remains a four-way stop and pedestrians have to be extra vigilant of motorists when crossing.
