Local dietitian Nhluvuko Ngobeni advocates about the dangers of salt

Ngobeni will be part of the World Salt Awareness Week which will end on March 17.

Nhluvuko Ngobeni is a 24-year-old who has always dreamed of becoming a dietitian from a young age. The 24-year old has studied hard and done whatever is necessary to achieve his goal.

“I was inspired by another dietitian, Melvin Chauke and to date, I have my own private practice near Moroka Police Station. “I believe that Dieticians are recognised as experts in food and nutrition and my dream is to help others to live healthily.

“I am currently an independent dietitian at Rockville Medical Centre,” said Ngobeni.

Ngobeni will be part of the World Salt Awareness Week which will end on March 17. The international campaign has been running for 11 years and each year with a different theme.

“The theme for this year is World Action on Salt and Health and the annual campaign is our chance to talk directly to the public, shining a light on hidden salt in our favourite food,” said Ngobeni. During the campaign.

Ngobeni said they will be teaching the public what salt is made of and how much salt can a person use in their food.

“Many people eat too much salt, twice the amount of salt they should.

“Half of the salt we eat is from salt added by manufacturers during the processing of foods and the other half of the salt we eat comes from salt we add during cooking and sprinkled on at the table,” said Ngobeni.

He said people should eat no more than five grams of salt per day.

“Five grams is the same as one teaspoon of salt and these grams include the salt that people add to food as well as salt already found in foods. Too much salt is bad and a person’s body needs only a small amount of salt to be healthy,” said Ngobeni.

He said eating more salt than a person may need can be unhealthy as it can increase a person’s blood pressure. Ngobeni can be reached on 067 041 3027 or email:nhluvukojentty@yahoo.com for further details.
