18 years behind bars detailed in ‘Second Chance’

Former inmate changes and writes a book detailing the dangers of crime

After being in prison for many years, ex-convict, Bobo Mokoena who lives in Phiri has become a better person in the community.

The 39-year old man says he has taken prison as a learning curve and in his years in prison he has written a book which consists of 148 pages.

The name of the book is called Second Chance and according to him, it talks about poverty, it also emphasises that crime does not pay and encourages youngsters not to commit crime.

After being sent to prison following various crimes, I realised that my life is going to change and decided to go to school in jail.

“The book that I wrote took me three years and it helped me to become a better person in life,” said Mokoena.

Mokoena was sentenced to 18 years in prison after being charged with robbery and was released after spending nine years.

He said he was living in poverty and that is why he decided to engage to crime but learnt that crime does not pay. He lives with his mother who is a pensioner and she could not do everything for him.

“By committing crime, questions that often existed in my mind were what if my father was always there for me, what if my father had good plans for me, I just wonder.

“I mean I don’t even have any sense of memories of him, good or bad. I don’t know him though. “The only thing I can tell is that my mother, Miriam unlike my father, she did all she could for me and my siblings.

“She is my queen and she always told me that crime does not pay.

Mokoena said he will be engaging in projects in the community to encourage the youth not to do crime. His book, sponsored by the South African Association of Book Clubs and Uprising Printers will be launched on March 21 at Soweto Theatre.
