The victim sustained bruises all over his body and had a swollen eye.

Ramothopho “Jay Jay” Ratshwene has accused a group of Meadowlands police officers of assaulting him – leaving him injured and swollen.

Ramothopho who lives in Meadowlands Zone Five said the incident took place on March 4 in the early hours of the morning.

According to the victim, he was with his three friends in the car when they came to a halt at Engen garage in Zone Three. There was an accident between a VW Polo and a Kia driver.

Ramothopho tried to help one of them by offering to escort them to the police station.

“On my way back to the scene, I noticed police officers had arrived and among them was one Johannesburg Metro Police cop. I said to my friend, ‘some police officers fail to do their work and this is not the first time something like this has happened.

“One cop heard me speak, intervened and wanted to fight me. All of a sudden, another police van pulled up and I found myself being forced to enter the back of the van.

“I was then taken into custody at Meadowlands Police Station. While handcuffed, police came to my cell and started assaulting me. I couldn’t defend myself because I was in handcuffs. I was helpless and had to accept the beatings. I was also tased and left there till the next morning,” said Ramothopho.

In the footage that we obtained, one man can be heard shouting ‘Don’t choke him guys, please! – I beg you, constable’.

This was when the officers were trying to get the victim into the back of the police van.

The victim sustained bruises all over his body and had a swollen eye.

Meadowlands SAPS communication officer, Octavia Thebe said a case was opened at the police station and is under investigation by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate.
