24th annual Township Marathon a success

Close to 4000 runners participated

The 24th annual Eldo’s Marathon took place yesterday at the Eldorado Park stadium with the first races, which included the full marathon, half marathon and 10km run starting as as early as 6am.

The 10km walk and 4.5 km run/walk started at 6:10am and 6:30am respectively. Close to 4000 runners participated in the event. Joe Morris, who is the organiser said that he was pleased with the turn out but wants next year to be bigger and better.

“To host events like this there’s a huge amount of money that needs to be paid to different entities so the aim for next year’s marathon is to get more private companies involved. The more sponsors we have, the greater the event will be,” said Morris.

Children from the Growing Champions organisation participated in the 4.5km fun run.

“A few of the sponsors we had were Coca Cola and Adcock Ingrim and we are so grateful for their willingness to assist,” he added.

Morris also said that the annual Township marathon does not receive the support and recognition it deserves.

“So for next year’s marathon this is something we want to work on. This is the only marathon where the race starts and finish finishes in a township,” he added.

Runners participated with their families and said that it was definitely a day to remember. Randolph Oliphant, resident who walked the 4.5km race with his sons said that the race allowed them to bond.

” It’s important for us as parents to make time for our children and spend time them. The race allowed for that. It also promotes a healthy lifestyle which I really like ,” said Oliphant.
