Illegal dumping threatens Westbury livelihood

Dumping a nightmare in the Westbury area

Illegal dumping has become a nightmare in our community as some unbothered residents dump on any open area they find.

Issues have been brought up, some residents are having troubles dealing with blocked drains when it rains heavily since some locals empty their bins straight into the drains.

With all of this dumping taking place; streets, parks, sports grounds, and even pavements have become unpleasant due to the smell and the flies and rodents are roaming the area.

Owner of Atletico Football Club, Daisy Doubel (Miss Dee) recently said, “As a football club owner, I am disgusted by the behaviour of our community. We have soccer teams traveling to Westbury every weekend and they are greeted by rubbish that is dumped right at the entrance of our soccer fields.”

“One guy drove in between the litter and there was a sharp object which punctured his tyre, unfortunately. We have juniors playing soccer every Saturday and imagine the health risks that they are facing every weekend. We also noticed rodents at the entrance and right at the back of the fields where the trees are.”

“If we continue with this behaviour, our community will become very unattractive to prospective developers. Our councillor needs to step up.” We contacted the Ward councillor Genevieve Sherman to find out what is happening at the sports grounds and how the council is dealing with the issue of illegal dumping.

The councillor said: “Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation are supposed to clean the soccer field every Wednesday. I spoke with them and they will be cleaning there tomorrow (February 21).

My plight is for the community to take ownership and name and shame.” The councillor said Florida roads get cleaned by Pikitup once a week, however, even with these schedules in place to remove the refuse, residents are still dumping in the area.

The next day after having received comment from the ward councillor, a photo was sent to show that Kretchmar and Croesus Avenue was being cleaned and in the photo, a bulldozer was removing the waste, this was on February 21.

MMC for Public Safety, councillor Michael Sun urges residents to take clear photos showing the culprit, the vehicle with registration number and the waste dumped and send the photos with the date, time and location. Residents are encouraged to send their tip-offs via WhatsApp or SMS to 082 779 1331.

All tip-offs remain anonymous.
