Residents taught to be self-reliant in case of emergency

EMS: Schooling residents about self-reliance

Residents in the Greater Eldorado Park were afforded the opportunity to complete a two-day basic First Aid and Basic Fire Safety course at the Yellow Ribbon Foundation last week.

Tebogo Moneoane from the local fire department said the reason why the initiative has been taken into the community is that the City of Johannesburg’s Emergency Management Services (EMS) wants all residents to be self-sustainable and that free courses like these are made available to achieve that.

“It is important for all our residents to be self-reliant in case any emergencies occur. While residents are waiting for an ambulance, instead of panicking, we teach them what to do to assist the patient until paramedics arrive,” said Moneoane.

On the first day of the course, residents were taught how to identify different types of patients.

“We taught participants how to identify the different degrees or types of burns. An example of this is when someone accidentally burns himself at home, instead of closing the wound immediately we teach them to place the wound under cold running water until the burning sensation disappears. Only then can the wound be dressed with a clean, wet, sterile bandage,” said Moneoane.

“We also teach them how to perform Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and how to remain calm when there is a crowd and they need to perform CPR. We teach them how to deal with situations where the EMS needs to be called for assistance,” he added.

Public Information Education Relation (P.I.E.R) department at the fire stations is there to educate and engage with the community. “We visit day care centre where we educate the learners about safety in general through song and dance,” said Moneoane.

Anyone that needs Basic First Aid and Basic Fire Safety training can visit their local fire stations.

“We can accommodate groups with a minimum of 12 people, all you have to do is come to the fire station, ask for the P.I.E.R department and set a date with us. It’s a two-day course. All you have to do is make a booking and ensure that you show up for training,” said Moneoane.
