Protea Glen townhouse residents to be given grace

The infamous complexes first made the news last year when Protea Urban reported on the alleged fraud that was taking place at the complex.

Residents of Edeni and Sibaya complexes in Protea Glen Ext 11 have been urged to visit ward 135 housing committee at Joe Gqabi Integrated Centre in Protea Glen before the end of February.

The infamous complexes first made the news last year when Protea Urban reported on the alleged fraud that was taking place at the complex that left its residents vulnerable to the threat of eviction. The alleged fraud happened when a property development company sold the buildings to another company while still collecting rent money from the residents.

This left the residents in arrears with the rightful owners of the property. Some of the residents also received eviction notices despite being title deed holders of the properties. The buildings’ rightful owners are giving those residents who wish to buy their properties on the complex an opportunity to do so.

Ward 135 housing committee member, Tumi Koapeng, who is calling on tenants of the Edeni and Sibaya complexes to visit his office and make amends with the rightful owners.

“Through the assistance of the councillor’s office we have managed to get hold of the tenants, we have been trying for two years but through engaging with this office I would say that we have gotten hold of at least half of them,” said Robert Mathebula, one of the owners of Urban Housing Finance, the rightful owners of the complexes.

Mathebula and his partner, Bongani Maile, are urging residents whose account with their company are in arrears to come forward and sign an acknowledgement of debt so as to begin the rehabilitation process.

“We are saying people must come forward and start paying their rent to the right people for at least three months then the process for them to buy the property can begin from that point on,” said Tumi Koapeng, ward 135 housing committee member.

The housing committee in conjunction with Urban Housing Financing are furthermore looking to hand out title deeds to those owning their properties at the complexes and will hold a special handover ceremony.

The stakeholders, however, warn that those who continue to defraud residents and Urban Housing Financing will face criminal charges as they plan on pressing formal charges.

Koapeng will be available to assist tenants of the complex as a matter of urgency with their queries on Tuesdays and Thursday at Joe Gqabi Integrated Centre in Protea Glen from 10:00 until 16:00.
