Dereleen James briefs 66 youths on job readiness

Putting in work to be work-ready.

Anti-drug activist, community leader and founder of the Yellow Ribbon Foundation (YFR), Dereleen James hosted a Work Readiness Workshop at the YRF offices on February 6 and 8. A representative from Lulaway, a youth employment engine, facilitated the sessions.

The workshop targeted youths between the ages of 18 and 35 and required those who attended to complete a number of modules which would assist them in making better decisions in the workplace.

The modules which were covered included people’s skills, money skills emotional intelligence and work skills. James said that workshops like this are of the utmost importance in a community where many fall through the cracks as a result of addiction, crime and unemployment.

A total of 66 attended the work readiness workshop.

She said, “Most of what was taught throughout the sessions is not taught at school and could possibly be the reason so many of our youth and residents in general battle to find a job or to keep one.”

“I sat in on a few sessions and was reminded of so many important skills. The sessions motivated me to work harder. I received feedback from the beneficiaries and all of them painted a clear picture of gratitude and appreciation, so they were motivated as well,” she added.

The beneficiaries were encouraged to set goals and to work on sustaining a positive attitude. Time management was discussed and those in attendance were advised to use their time wisely and to make sure that their days do not go to waste. James addressed those who attended and spoke to them about how important it is to take yourself seriously.

“Change starts with you, how seriously you take this is all up to you,” she said.

A total of 66 beneficiaries benefited from the free Work Readiness Workshop. YRF would like to thank community leader Cheryl Pillay and Jimmy’s Fish and Chips for supplying lunch and Coca Cola for providing drinks.

“I honestly have the most amazing staff, they work so hard, all of this wouldn’t be possible without them,” said James.

Roman Masocel, Fagmeeda Edries, Mary-Jane Hendricks and Nomathamsanqa Mkhonza all make sure that the YRF runs smoothly. For information on dates for the next workshop, the coordinator Nomathamsanqa Mkhonza can be contacted on 087 077 0058.
