Cerebral palsy not enough to keep young Luken down

Luken Hoosain will be five years old in April this year and lives with cerebral palsy. Despite this condition, he is twice as energetic as your average tot, with a heart as big as Africa! At birth, his brain did not get enough oxygen and started bleeding.

As a result, a scar formed which contributed to his condition. On the whole, cerebral palsy has a number of effects on the body. Muscles are either too tight or too loose and Luken’s father, Anwaar, explains some of the effects.

He said, “Balance is affected, posture is affected, eating habits and appetite are problematic and even vision becomes impaired. Other symptoms include speech and hearing issues, shaky movements, sleep issues, pain, seizures and it even compromises mobility.”

According to the devoted father, there are four major types of motor neuron disease. “The types are monoplegia, hemiplegia, diplegia and quadriplegic cerebral palsy,” he added.

Luken is diplegic, which left his legs impaired and affected his ability to walk. His leg muscles are tight and as a result, his leg movements are restricted.

Anwaar said, “People stare at him when he is out with his siblings and some even point fingers and laugh at him. I know they only do this because they don’t know him, and more so, they know nothing about cerebral palsy. It’s not easy.”

He said, “My son has had the opportunity of seeing a specialist who confirmed how much work lies ahead of him as well as for us as his parents. We were told that if he ever wants to have a close to normal life, hours and hours of physiotherapy, coupled with botox injection treatment is needed.”

This treatment will help ease the tension in Luken’s legs, helping his brain relay the messages to his legs with less effort and much less pain.

“This means that he will need to be transported all the way from Ennerdale to as far as Alberton for his botox therapy and then twice weekly, to and from Coronationville and Forest Hill for his physio-, speech-, and occupational therapy. There’s a long road of recovery ahead of us,” he said.

“We can only thank God for bringing our little boy this far. With the continuous prayer and support from family, all has become as easy as it is for me, thus far. With the journey to his full restoration ahead, it’s going to be a challenging, costly road to take.

“I, therefore, call for every little bit of help we can get. Your heartfelt donation and effort will be greatly appreciated. Please feel free to support us, from the bake sales, beaded bracelets on sale and donation lists that may go around, every little bit helps,” he added.
