'Laat jou hakke raas!'

The 24th annual Township Marathon will be taking place on February 24 in Eldorado Park this year. The race is a Two Oceans and Comrades Marathon qualifier and a total of R 81 840 is up for grabs.

Runners will meet at the Eldorado Park Stadium in Extension Nine, where they will gear up for the race which will start at 6 am. Joe Morris, who is the race director said that he has always been dedicated to athletics and that this marathon is something to be proud of.

He said, “We hosted our first township marathon in 1995, that year only 68 runners entered, 24 years later, we have over 4 000 runners running through the streets of Eldorado Park.”

Morris continued, “Initiatives like this not only introduces athletics to our community but most importantly, it promotes unity among residents and promotes a healthy lifestyle.

The Eldos marathon attracted 4000 runners last year.

“It gives residents something positive to look forward to and proves that our community can achieve great things. It also is the only marathon that starts and finishes in a township.”

Morris added that he encourages residents to participate. “I want to make one thing clear, the race will be safe. Cars will be parked at the stadium, with 50 security guards that will be on duty. There will be 150 marshals along the route and there will be 50 JMPD officers ensuring everyone’s safety,” he said.

The race will be a two-lap course with 10 water points, each of which will be manned by 25 people.

“Runners will run from the stadium then turn right onto the Main Road where they will then run towards the Golden Highway. From the Golden Highway, they will turn left onto Union Road and run towards Kliptown and Klipspruit. From Klipspruit West, they will make their way back to the stadium,” he said.
