LISTEN: Brand spanking new uniforms for 100 learners

Many of the parents were emotional and said that it made them happy knowing that their children will now be able to fit in with their peers.

The Gauteng Department of Social Development, in partnership with the South African Social Security Agency, visited Floridalaan Primary School in Extension Seven on February 1 to distribute school uniform packs to needy learners who have been identified by teachers at the school.

A total of 100 learners were been identified and 47 uniform packs were handed over, each consisting of a single school uniform a pair of shoes, a pair of socks, a jersey, a tunic or trouser and a vest and underpants.

Social Development member of the executive committee (MEC) Nandi Mayathula-Khoza, was at the school and addressed the teachers, learners and parents. She said that the handover was part of the Gauteng Provincial Government’s school readiness programme to ensure that children from vulnerable families acquire school uniform to facilitate access to education.

She said, “Making sure that each and every child has everything they need for school is important, it starts with a decent uniform. We have selected learners who are in need of school uniform and have committed ourselves to provide those learners with this necessity.”

Mayathula-Khoza encouraged the learners to take their education seriously and to stay focused on their personal goals and dreams.

”As the government of Gauteng, we are very thrilled and excited about the amount of work our children have put towards their schooling. This initiative was started because we want to offer an equal opportunity among learners to escape the stigma of those who come from disadvantaged backgrounds,” she said.

”Indeed, we are also delighted that the school uniform is manufactured locally by our women-owned cooperatives as the government continues to increase support for the revitalisation of the township economy,” added the MEC.

Member of Parliament Beverly Abrahams, Ward councillor Fazel Jaffer and other community leaders attended the ceremony and parents were invited to the school to collect the uniforms.

Many of the parents were emotional and said that it made them happy knowing that their children will now be able to fit in with their peers.
