WATCH: 36 title deeds handed over to their rightful owners in Diepkloof

Diepkloof business owners breathe a sigh of relief.

Mayor Herman Mashaba’s visit to hand over title deeds to Soweto business owners has been labelled as historical and has made the recipients grateful and proud to finally own their pieces of land.

Today [February 11], Mashaba was joined by MMC for Economic Development, Leah Knott to meet with the beneficiaries and hand to them what they’ve been waiting for. The title deeds hand over to business owners was held at the Diepkloof Multipurpose.

This hand over of title deeds is an initiative by the City of Joburg to redress the distribution of council-owned land. Johannesburg Property Company (JPC) and Land Regularisation Programme (LRP) were also involved. Mashaba elaborated that the ownership of land is pivotal for a country’s economic growth.

Mashaba said, “Without property, the people of our country cannot go further in building tangible wealth.”

MMC Knott concurred with the mayor and alluded that the desire of the CoJ is to see people’s livelihoods improve.

One beneficiary, Molapo Stone said, “We are very happy to finally experience this honour of owning our inherited properties, but we have waited for a very long time.”

Thabo Moloi who also received a title deed to his business property exclaimed that even though he has finally received the proof of land ownership – he thought that the process would be quicker after 1994, “But we have waited for far too long,” said Moloi.
