AZOP pays respect to Baker Asvat

Azanian People's Organisation honouring the late Baker Asvat.

Azanian People’s Organisations (AZOP) members gathered in the same tune last Sunday on January 27. They chanted and sang struggle songs in commemoration of Doctor Abu Baker Asvat.

They held a march to honour the late Asvat, the march departed from Regina Mundi in Rockville marching near the site where Abu Baker Asvat was murder.

According to AZOP President Strike Thokoane, the purpose of this event was to commemorate the late Doctor Abu Baker Asvat who was brutally murdered in his surgery in Rockville.

He said that Asvat was a person’s doctor and worked with people. Azanian People’s Organisation doesn’t forget all the fallen heroes.

“We visited his grave in the morning to pay our respect. We must never forget people who fought in this country, liberation and the reason why we should be free because we are oppressed. When our young people can understand and hear the stories that this country was not given to us for free. Freedom was fought for and therefore they need to take a stick forward for the next generation,” Thokoane.

Thokoane added that once again we remember Abu Baker Asvat that he fought for the country to be free.



City of Joburg Chairperson, Ntobeka Ka Zondo said, “This is where our struggle Stewart died. The spirit of Asvat is with us and we will never forget him. He died for black people, this country and liberation.”

National Chairperson Nelvis Qekema said somebody said the weapon is the memory. The reason why we are here today it is because of memory.

“If you don’t remind your people about themselves they soon forget about who they are. If you don’t remind your people about their oppression, don’t take it for a guarantee that they know,” said Qekema.
