Girls, Lebone Foundation has the answers

The foundation has 20 mentors available to help the learners during Saturday classes.

The Lebone Foundation founded by four friends Arabela Chilwane (18), Matshepo Mamabolo(18), Sandisile Mkhonazi (19) and Tshegofatso Chapole (19) is on a crusade to save township education to achieve academic excellence.

According to Chilwane, three of the foundation founding members namely Mamabolo, herself and Mkhonazi met a few years ago at an academy in Mayerton.

Later the trio met their fourth founding member Chapole at Witwatersrand University last year. The ladies reach a consensus and opted to establish the foundation for girls.

“The foundation’s objective is to design a tool that when implemented, township education is greatly changed, especially girl child education. We are continuing with our initiative to identify 15 girls from local schools to be mentored and further get assisted with their academic studies,” said Chilwane.

She said they have 20 mentors available to help the learners during Saturday classes. Other activities involved helping the learners develop their talents in dancing, visual arts, poetry and debate.

“We also help learners with self-actualization programmes through which various topics about development are debated. Having mentors will help learners confront emotional challenges. They will also benefit from other forms of support,” said Chilwane.
