WATCH: Sibu Nzuza admits the ‘5 Minutes’ song was inspired by real-life events

Sibu is no 5 Minutes man in the industry.

The multi-talented artist, Sibu Nzuza, explores the complexities of maintaining a balance between one’s work and personal life in his new single titled ‘5 Minutes’. The Ambitiouz Entertainment singer signed to the label last November explained that the single was inspired by real-life events.

“Five minutes is just so I can keep that discipline between me and her so she can understand this my time for working not my time for her and me,” Nzuza elaborated.

Nzuza says he tries to keep his songwriting as original and descriptive as possible in order to refrain from the humdrum lyrics we often hear in love songs. He describes his genre of music as new age African which is audible in the influences that can be heard on songs like Potoza game. He is inspired by a range of genres such as maskandi, afropop, pop and many more.

“Maskandi only inspires me to a certain point…what I really took from maskandi is the backing [vocals] art to it. It’s all about picking something from here and there and making it the Sibu thing,” Nzuza explained.

The Durban born artist says he hopes the revitalisation of the African sound in the South African music industry is not just a phase.

“I remember this started just after the whole Wakanda wave and suddenly African was cool so I hope it’s not just a trend because if it isn’t then we are going in the right direction,” Nzuza said.

“Music is about doing what’s already there but in your own way,” he said when explaining how he draws inspiration from legends such as Hugh Masekela, Jabu Khanyile and Yvonne Chaka Chaka.

Nzuza plans on releasing a few more singles this year before a full body of work as his current mission is to get his name out there. The singer, instrumentalist, rapper and songwriter feels that the controversy around Ambitiouz Entertainment was caused by artists either not reading or understanding the fine print of their contracts.

“My very first meeting with Ambitiouz was actually very awkward because I had questions but not because I was doubtful about joining, I already knew I was going to sign…I asked questions and how they explained things made sense to me. Certain things about the label weren’t true, it’s important to sign what you understand,” Nzuza elaborated.

One fact people would never be able to guess about Nzuza, according to him, is that he can’t ride a bicycle. He, however, concluded by saying he plans on conquering this fear soon.
