The unrelenting fight against drug demon

"We can't expect rehabilitation centres to house all the people affected by drugs."

Naledi Police are up to their necks with trying to fight the scourge drug abuse that constantly leaves Naledi station in a dodgy site. Upon several occasions, the police have patrolled and raided the area and after each and every time they have gotten rid of the young people who hang around the station, the police come back to the same problem the following day.

The problem has gotten to a point where the police are thinking different things they can do to provide a permanent solution to the problem. Despite the severity of the situation not all hope is lost as the police are left alone to solve the issue, a helping hand will soon join forces.

From a collaborative effort between different stakeholders, talks have been in place in Naledi with the aim of finding ways to make sure that the young people referred to do not remain trapped in the circle of drugs, but find a way to better themselves.

“We can’t expect rehabilitation centres to house all the people affected by drugs all at once but what we can do is optimize on our referral systems so that we get as many young people as possible involved in the journey of rehabilitation.

“Forming partnership enables us to create a chain process where people who are affected by drugs will find themselves at some point in the journey of rehabilitation for a longer period of time.

“On the other end of problem we need to find an unapologetic strategy to make sure that drugs do not circulate in the community so that even if we are helping people the problem doesn’t continue from the source and that is where the community play an integral part on our way forward,” said Constable Maluleke from New Canada Station.
