20 learners taken to various hospitals after driver crashes into them in Jabulani

One learner is critically injured.

Gauteng Department of Education has learned with shock and sadness of the car accident involving learners from Jabulani Tech Secondary School in Soweto.

It is alleged a driver of a Subaru lost control of his vehicle and crashed into approximately 20 learners, as he was trying to spin the car on the busy road.

The learners were walking into the school premises at the time of the incident, which took place yesterday (January 28).

The learners were taken to Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, Bheki Mlangeni, Koos and Dobsonville Clinics for necessary medical observation and assistance. One learner is critically injured.

The school informed parents about this unfortunate incident. Our psychosocial unit has been dispatched to the school to provide the necessary support and counselling.

The department said it strongly condemns the careless driver for his reckless behaviour in and around a school environment with so many young innocent souls. We are hopeful that law enforcement agencies will investigate this case and bring the perpetrator to book.
